Pricing Sweet Spots (2025-2026)
| Tier | Annual | Lifetime | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Impulse buy | $9.99-14.99/yr | $19.99-29.99 | Simple utilities |
| Standard | $14.99-19.99/yr | $39.99-49.99 | Most indie apps |
| Premium | $29.99-49.99/yr | $79.99-99.99 | AI-heavy or professional |
| Pro | $59.99-99.99/yr | $149.99-199.99 | B2B or power users |
Pricing Psychology
- Anchor effect: Show lifetime price first to make annual feel cheap by comparison — OR show annual first to make lifetime feel like a deal
- A/B test both via Superwall to find which converts better for your category
- Lifetime should be 2-3x annual — less and you're leaving money on the table, more and nobody buys it
- Avoid monthly pricing for indie apps — it feels nickel-and-dime and churns faster. Annual + lifetime is the winning indie combo.
- Free trial: 7 days is standard. 3 days for apps with instant value (utilities), 14 days for apps that need habit formation (fitness, journaling).
Conversion Rate Benchmarks
| Metric | Low | Average | Good | Great |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free trial → paid | 10% | 15-20% | 25-30% | 35%+ |
| Freemium → paid | 2% | 3-5% | 6-8% | 10%+ |
| Paywall view → purchase | 5% | 10-15% | 20% | 30%+ |
| Annual vs monthly split | 40/60 | 50/50 | 60/40 | 70/30 |
| Monthly churn (subscription) | 15%+ | 8-12% | 5-7% | <5% |
Retention Benchmarks
Retention is the #1 predictor of long-term revenue. If users don't come back, nothing else matters.
| Metric | Poor | Average | Good | Great |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| D1 (Day 1) | <20% | 25-30% | 35-40% | 45%+ |
| D7 | <10% | 12-18% | 20-25% | 30%+ |
| D30 | <5% | 6-10% | 12-18% | 20%+ |
Retention by Category
| Category | Typical D1 | Typical D30 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Social | 30-40% | 15-25% | Network effects drive retention |
| Health & Fitness | 25-35% | 8-15% | Habit formation is hard |
| Productivity | 20-30% | 10-15% | Depends on daily utility |
| Games | 25-35% | 5-10% | High initial, drops fast |
| Utilities | 15-25% | 10-20% | Lower daily use, but sticky |
| Finance | 25-35% | 15-20% | Transactions create switching cost |
How to Improve Retention
- Onboarding: Show core value within 60 seconds of first launch
- Notifications: Smart reminders (not spammy) at natural trigger points
- Streaks: Gamify daily usage (but don't punish missed days)
- Quick wins: Let users feel productive in <2 minutes per session
- Data lock-in: The more data users add, the harder it is to leave
